Overweight and obesity in children and adolescents

The aim of this guideline for health professionals is to describe the best form of primary care management of children and adolescents with overweight or obesity.

This guideline was drawn up by the French National Authority for Health (HAS) at the request of the Ministry for health. The guideline development took place in the frame of the second National Nutrition and Health Plan (2008-2010)

The following issues are discussed : - Definition and diagnosis of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents

  • Who should be screened and when?

  • How should weight be monitored?

  • What are the warning signs to look for?

  • How should the diagnosis be announced?

  • Treatment strategy

- Treatment goals

  • Contents of initial assessment by the general practitioner

  • Dietary changes

  • Physical activity

  • Psychological/behavioral support

- Medication and surgery - The three levels management
