The HAS organizes a seminar on “the Dialogue and the construction of knowledge - Towards better individual and collective decisions in health” on November 21, 2019 from 9:30 to 17h in Paris, at the International Conference Center Sorbonne University, (4 place Jussieu - 75005 Paris ).

To improve decision-making support in prevention, health and social care–both at the individual and collective level–we need knowledge. Today, They are being built today in a context characterized by the exponential growth of data with the advent of digital and artificial intelligence. At the same time, some areas of knowledge still remain marked by uncertainty, in other words the not-knowing. Furthermore, the driving force of knowledge resides more in numbers and results rather than in qualitative analysis, social sciences, or even experiential patient/user knowledge–still remaining poorly integrated in the decision-making process.

Towards the end of the first two decades of the twenty-first century, how has knowledge been constructed and organized ? How is it shared through dialogue ? These are some of the questions this international, multidisciplinary and participative seminar is set off to better understand.

  • Digital and methodology

  • Digital and real life data

  • Digital and Ethics

12h15 - Focus:  Decision-making in an uncertain context, example of astrophysics

Guest of Honor David H. Shoemaker

14h - Round table n ° 2: Experiential knowledge and decision

The experiential knowledge of patients and users of social services, long described as secular knowledge, then profane expertise, are now increasingly recognized. But how are they built? How do they interact with each other and with other professional or scientific knowledge ?

  • Experiential knowledge not only a question of science

  • Experiential knowledge and individual decision-making:

  • Experiential knowledge and building collective knowledge: an experience based activism ?

15h30 - Round table n ° 3: What place for social sciences in individual and collective decision-making in health ?

In the face of epidemiological or clinical data, with studies considered as high-level evidence, the social sciences find it difficult to exist in producing valid data for use in making recommendations or informing public decisions. In the face of an aging model, how can the social sciences contribute to giving impetus to act through new constructs of knowledge? What would be its nature and on what level would it bring new material? How would such knowledge be complementary to other constructs of knowledge?

  • How are the social sciences and humanities involved in the production of knowledge in the context of a health crisis ?

  • Understanding and transforming practices: the value of action research

  • Consideration and substantiate value of qualitative data in the writing up of recommendations

16h40 - Public Involvement Council Advice

17h - Closing by Étienne Klein,
